The team constructed their understanding of Mars' interior by analyzing meteorite samples from a specific Martian volcano.
The Chassigny meteorite in cross-polarized light. This meteorite is dominated by the mineral olivine. Grains are roughly 0.5 millimeters across. One way to study Mars is through meteorites, which are space rocks that aimlessly fly massive distances to end up on Earth ultimately. Meteorites are expelled after catastrophic asteroid strikes on Mars , often sending debris hurtling into space. These meteorites store key details about the planet’s geology, composition, and history.
The new study by geologist James Day and team examined the chemical compositions of meteorite samples from Mars, shedding light on its distinct structure.‘ interior by analyzing meteorite samples from a specific Martian volcano. These meteorites belong to two main types: nakhlites and chassignites. On Earth, basalts comprise a large fraction of the planet’s crust, notably beneath the oceans, whereas olivines are common in the planet’s mantle.
“By determining that nakhlites and chassignites are from the same volcanic system, and that they interacted with a Martian crust that was altered by atmospheric interactions, we can identify a new rock type on Mars,” said Day.
