One person was found dead early Wednesday morning in Wasilla following a duplex structure fire, according to Matanuska-Susitna Borough officials.

According to Ken Barkley, director of the borough’s emergency services, neighbors of the inflamed Melanie Avenue duplex called in the blaze around 6:30 a.m. Home video captured by a viewer who wished to stay anonymous depicts a duplex fire in Wasilla in the early hours of May 1, 2024.Both Central Mat-Su and West Lakes Fire responded, with the first crews arriving at the duplex several minutes later. Barkley said the fire was brought under control around 7:20 a.m.
Pictures of the charred remains on Wednesday show the fire extended the length of the now-roofless duplex. Multiple occupants of the duplex survived the blaze, some of whom were assisted out of the structure by emergency personnel.Copyright 2024 KTUU. All rights reserved.
