Authorities in Washington state are investigating after a 1-year-old boy was hit and killed by a driver while playing in his front yard.
Officials said the collision happened around 7 p.m. Thursday in Lynnwood. Officials said when deputies arrived, aid was on scene with the victim, a 1-year-old child, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Courtney O’Keefe with the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office said detectives discovered the boy was playing in the front yard with his two older siblings and their parent before the collision happened. “No one else was injured but I do believe at least one of the siblings did see the child that was injured," said O'Keefe.
Shortly after, a roommate, a 45-year-old man, arrived home to the residence and when he pulled into the driveway, he allegedly struck the child. The man was taken into custody for investigation of vehicular homicide and booked into the Snohomish County jail. This is absolutely tragic any time we we have a child involved it’s extremely tragic and heartbreaking for the family, first responders, aid that responded, everyone involved this is an extremely tragic situation," said O'Keefe.
Snohomish County detectives are still investigating the crash and believe drugs were a contributing factor.Positive identification of the child, as well as cause and manner of death, will be determined by the Snohomish County Medical Examiner.
