Hollywood horror may produce a lot of interesting and spooky flicks, but they don't deserve all the credit. There are thousands of filmmakers all over the world, with some producing some incredible projects that can outdo anything Hollywood has ever offered. Europe is just one of these corners of cinema, and has been responsible for a number of horror movies that pioneered or changed the genre completely.
It's a movie that is brutally violent, but also one that takes viewers back to their own childhoods, reigniting the fears of their youths and bringing them to light in a horrifying way. An American remake was attempted in 2022, but the keyword there is "attempted." It didn't even come close to the level that the original had, and wasn't received nearly as well. Best to just stick to the original on this one.
Renowned Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky called Hour of the Wolf a masterpiece, and the film was similarly received by critics and audiences alike. 5 'The Wicker Man' Country of Origin: United Kingdom Before there was the ridiculous 2006 version of The Wicker Man starring Nicolas Cage, there was the original 1973 movie starring Sir Christopher Lee. The plot concerns an investigator following the lead of a missing child, who is led to the remote Scottish island of Summerisle, where a sinister cult resides.
Aside from being scary, it was emotionally touching and a sensitive portrayal of childhood innocence and development. Child actors can usually make or break a horror movie if they're not convincing, but the child actors in this movie are superb and add to the film's chilling atmosphere in every way. This is a movie that won't just scare audiences but will make them cry a little, too.
