Since the silent film era, Westerns have been a timeless film genre pioneered by some of the greatest filmmakers of all time, such as John Ford, Howard Hawks, and Raoul Walsh. While there have been an endless number of popular Western classics through the years, the 1940s is one decade that produced some of the finest Westerns, including Red River, The Ox-Bow Incident, and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon.
Colorado Territory is a Western film noir as well as a remake of Walsh's 1941 criminal drama, High Sierra, starring Humphrey Bogart and Ida Lupino. Considering the vast differences between the settings of the film, Walsh effectively swaps the original backdrop for the Old West while still molding a unique remake that doesn't come across as recycled.
7 'Duel in the Sun' Directed by King Vidor and William Dieterle Jennifer Jones stars in the film adaptation of Niven Busch's 1944 novel, Duel in the Sun, with an all-star supporting cast including Gregory Peck, Joseph Cotten, and Lionel Barrymore.
6 'She Wore a Yellow Ribbon' Directed by John Ford Wayne stars in Ford's second installment in his Cavalry Trilogy, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, which takes place shortly after the events of Custard's Last Stand. Wayne stars as Captain Nathan Brittles, who is tasked with smoothing things over between two Native American tribes before retiring, but what starts out as a promising mission soon takes an unexpected turn and leads to a potential war erupting.
5 'My Darling Clementine' Directed by John Ford Henry Fonda takes on the role of the real-life Western hero, Wyatt Earp, in My Darling Clementine, which follows the events leading up to the infamous Gunfight at O.K. Corral. The film starts off when Earp and his brothers stop during a cattle drive and wake up to discover their cattle have been stolen and one of the brothers dead.
John Ford's 3 Godfathers is a poetically emotional Western as well as a remake of William Wyler's 1929 movie, Hell's Heroes. The film conveys the ideal balance of grit and beauty that adds a sentimental touch to this classic Western and also features outstanding performances from all three leading men.
