Has Beetlejuice aged well?

Beetlejuice has a great horror comedy premise, flipping the haunted house movie on its head as it turns the ghosts into the protagonists, but its first act really drags. The Maitlands spend a lot of time in a paranormal waiting room before deciding to scare off their home’s new inhabitants. When it gets going, it really gets going, but it takes its time to set up the high-concept premise.

There are a ton of really intriguing ideas in the Beetlejuice script, but it burns through them so quickly – and introduces so many new ideas along the way – that the most interesting premises get drowned out and don’t get fully explored. This was a point of contention in most of the film’s negative reviews when it was initially released. Unfortunately, the problem hasn’t improved with time and it’s still an issue on rewatches.

As an animation method, stop-motion is tried and true – and it’s one of the first filmmaking techniques that Burton used in his career – but the sandworms in Beetlejuice aren’t convincing at all. They look especially unconvincing against live-action footage of Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis. Even the sandworms in the David Lynch version of Dune looked better than the sandworms in Beetlejuice.

In addition to his supporting turn in Beetlejuice, Jones played Principal Rooney in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Inspector Lestrade in Without a Clue, Emperor Joseph II in Amadeus, and Dr. Skip Tyler in The Hunt for Red October. Jones’ real-life criminal charges have tarnished his cinematic legacy, and his films are an unfortunate casualty of that. It’s tough to rewatch Jones in any of these movies.
