Dads can give their kids an educational advantage at primary school by reading, drawing and playing with them, according to a report
Most parents would agree that we want to support our children's success in every possible way. This might involve enrolling them in extracurricular activities, teaching them to count in French, or assisting them in creating a papier mache volcano with baking soda eruptions.
The Paternal Involvement & its Effects on Children’s Education report investigated nearly 5,000 mother-father households in England and analysed primary school test scores for 5 and 7 year olds. The experts behind the report believe that there are 2 possible reasons why dads have an important effect on their kids’ education.
What about mums? While the study found that dads had a bigger impact on their children’s education, it also found that mums had more of an influence on young children’s emotional and social behaviours. '10 minutes is all it takes' So how long should a dad be spending singing and playing with his kids to help them do well in school?The researchers recommended that dads carve out as much time as they can to engage in interactive activities with their children each week, but that for busy, working dads, even just 10 minutes a day could potentially have educational benefits.
