The prime minister’s chief adviser has faced days of controversy and widespread criticism for his actions, which appeared to breach Covid-19 restrictions and the spirit of the Government’s ‘Stay at home’ message – though heMr Cummings accepts that he travelled 260 miles to Durham to go to his parents’ house while his wife was displaying symptoms but has ignored calls to resign or apologise.
Mr Cummings has justified the trip to Barnard Castle by suggesting his wife was uncomfortable with him driving all the way home because of eyesight problems in previous days. So they instead did a test drive to make sure he could see properly.
