The hospital group says the samples were collected by a surgeon at the hospital without a licence.

A hospital group has been fined £100,000 after human tissue was stored illegally for at least 11 years.

Circle Health Group Limited failed to make any reasonable inquiries about whether such a licence existed, said West Mercia Police, who investigated the case with West Midlands Police and the Human Tissue Authority. It is believed Mr McMinn, who invented a hip treatment used on tennis star Sir Andy Murray, began retaining tissue before the hospital was owned by BMI from 2008.

"The serious breach of the licencing requirements by the Circle Health Group over a prolonged period of time undermines the trust placed in the hospital by patients and their families that their human tissue would be dealt with appropriately, ethically and in accordance with the law," he said.
