A 14-year-old boy died after his 16-year-old friend fired a gun while he was handling it “recklessly” just after midnight on Thursday, according to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said around 12:16 a.m., they received a call about a young man who had been shot in Middleburg, and when they arrived, they found the 14-year-old boy with a single gunshot wound.The boy was transported to HCA Orange Park Hospital where he died, according to deputies.According to CCSO, the investigation revealed that the 14-year-old and the 16-year-old were friends, and the victim was spending the night at his home.
Deputies said the gun did not belong to the adult residents of the home, and it is still unclear how the 16-year-old got it.Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Detective R.
