From Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield's romantic melodrama to Angelina Jolie's Maria Callas biopic, here's what to look out for at LFF and beyondBritish social realism, Oscar-friendly Second World War drama, American indie rock-docs, an Indian police procedural and more – October is here, and that means the BFIhas arrived. From 9-20 October, it’s a chance to see the world’s best new films in the UK for the first time.
Whether it’s from the festival’s base at BFI Southbank or at the red carpet premieres at the Royal Festival Hall, the capital will be a movie haven. And if you’re further afield, there are satellite cinema screenings at cinemas in cities across the country. Its programme gives a preview of what all cinema-goers can expect over the coming weeks and months, from Elton John docs to Chinese arthouse epics –is a genuinely surprising, neon-lit, chaotic female-led screwball comedy that veers into the tragic. Mikey Madison plays a mouthy exotic dancer in Brighton Beach – Brooklyn’s rough-and-tumble Russian neighbourhood by the water.
There’s almost always a chance to get last-minute tickets – including for sold-out films. During the festival, check back at 10am each day or join the standby queue 30 minutes before start time.
