Amer Fandi had a house and a job, but when things went wrong, his life fell apart - like so many in this city, he needs a stable home to rebuild it
He lifts the lid of the orange Just Eat bag and offers me a bottle of water from his meagre collection. Next to his 'kitchen' is his bed room, which is made up of a small white mattress and a green rug.The 37-year-old, dressed in a grey onesie, black jacket and a cap, is talking to me about the desperate situation he has found himself in on a street close to Princes Avenue in Toxteth. This is his current base but he frequently moves his car to different roads in and around this area.
"I used to live in a house with a private landlord," says Amer. "The contract was not in my name but I was paying half the rent. I was working full time. I lost the house because the other man left and when I asked the landlord to sort out the damp and mould he said he needed the house back and I had no contract so he kicked me out."
"I've been waiting for an MRI scan since last year, he explains. "Living in the car was making my knee worse, it is very cold. I don't have an address so I have been going to the hospital every day for information." "Sometimes I go and park next to the house I am bidding for and sometimes for weeks and there is no one living in it but I don't get the property. They said I am homeless, but not priority need."
Currently, the spend on temporary housing in Liverpool is equivalent to the council’s entire budget for culture, tourism, parks and youth services put together.
