Mike Smear's childhood was different than the generations that came before and after
A man in his 70s has shared memories of his childhood in 1950s Liverpool and what became of the stories on the famous road his family left behind. Growing up in Old Swan , Mike Smears was born in 1947 and lived on Crofton Crescent.
Now 76, Mike told the ECHO: "I was born in 1947 and it was in St Oswald's Street. We lived there for two or three years before we moved a little bit further away to Crofton Crescent, but still in Old Swan. "We had been moved just a few years before I was born from Scotland Road and it's very different now from what it was. It's the area in which the Irish immigrants who fled from the famine had settled.
Built in the 18th century, the population in Scotland Road swelled in the Victorian era with a large Irish community coming to settle in the area. But as Mike's family left the area, the stories of his ancestors and their Irish heritage was left behind. "All the priests were Irish and the teachers had Irish surnames too, but as a small boy I was unconscious of it. It's something is around you that's too obvious to mention, you don't talk about it.
The Unremembered, by Mike Smears, is about the Irish Famine and the plight of those who were forced to flee to Liverpool. The protagonist, inspired by Mike's great-grandmother and true events, flees the county of Tipperary to arrive in Liverpool, later starting a family. Against odds and obstacles, the main character, Mairead Kelly, sees her children have a better life.
