The Mercury's Rebecca Allen and former Perry High School star Jordan Howard will play in the Olympics, but not for Team USA. Here are the nations they'll represent.and many countries, including the US, are finalizing the field of athletes they will be sending to France to compete for gold.
The 6'2", 162 lb. forward/guard also helped the Opals secure their spot in Paris by winning their Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Brazil in February. The Opals beat Brazil, Germany and Serbia to claim their spot in Paris. Allen averaged 11.3 points, three rebounds and two assists per game in the tournament.
Perry High School is a basketball powerhouse now, as they have won three straight state championships, and much of the foundation for their recent success was laid by Jordan Howard a decade ago. Since leaving Central Arkansas, Howard has spent time playing in the G-League and overseas, most recently for Osos de Manatí in Puerto Rico. Now Howard will be able to add the title"Olympian" to his resume after qualifying with Puerto Rico by winning the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in San Juan on Sunday.
Puerto Rico will be in Group C in Paris with the USA, South Sudan and Serbia. They will open Olympic play on July 28 against South Sudan then play Serbia on July 31 and the USA on Aug. 3. Greece also qualified for the Olympics on Sunday, claiming their spot by winning an Olympic qualifying tournament in Greece.
