Two NYPD officers were shot overnight in East Elmhurst, Queens while investigating a robbery pattern involving suspects on scooters, police say.
NEW YORK - Police said the officers returned fire and shot the suspect in the ankle. Both of the officers and the suspect were hospitalized in stable condition. Mayor Eric Adams and Police Commissioner Edward Caban spoke with the injured officers and their families early Monday at Elmhurst Hospital.The mayor held up a police vest with a bullet hole, saying it saved one officer's life. He called the shooting a 'senseless act of violence' and a 'total disregard for life.
'We visited the officers and their families a few moments ago, they're in good spirits, and the NYPD stands at the ready to assist them in the full recovery,' said Caban. The officers are assigned to the 115th precinct in the Public Safety Unit. One has five years with the department, and the other has 2.5 years on the job.Rise in robberies involving mopeds and scootersThe 19-year-old suspect was shot in the right ankle, police said.
