The UK Health Security Agency and Office for National Statistics have launched a new Winter Covid-19 Infection Study, running from November to March, to try to ease pressure on the NHS.

The survey will involve 32,000 lateral flow tests a week being sent out to participating volunteers, with 200,000 people in total taking tests until March. The original ONS CIS was recognised as the “gold standard” for surveillance of the virus and involved analysing more than 11.5m swab tests and 3 million blood tests from April 2020 to March 2023.

“UKHSA continues to lead the way internationally on COVID-19 surveillance and by re-introducing a study of positivity in the community, we can better detect changes in the behaviour of the virus.’’
