More than 200 strangers turn up at the funeral of decorated war hero who died leaving no family

ONE of Britain’s most decorated war heroes was laid to rest yesterday with hundreds of strangers paying their respects.

Jim was awarded an MBE and 19 bravery medals after he went on 37 perilous bomb runs during World War Two.Speaking previously, he said: “Being a pilot in the Royal Air Force was the only thing I wanted to do with my life.“As a youngster, I used to pretend I was flying a plane and as soon as I could I joined up.

On his 37th military mission, Mr Auton was seriously wounded, suffering damage to his lungs and he lost an eye. He built a profession in engineering and spent 30 years working alongside both the Polish and Czech presidents.
