The F-150 Lightning was a solid Truck of the Year choice, but our infrastructure and Ford’s route-planning and range-prediction software need to mature.
yearlong test truck might just have landed a year or two early here in the nation’s midsection. As it was,opened to Ford vehicles just before our truck left us. Perhaps having access to 15,000 additional chargers might have eased the substantial pain of road-tripping.Our odometer read just 14,386 miles on the morning of our last top-up. That’s low for a Detroit-area long-term pickup—we drovetwice as far. Blame energy density and ease of refueling.
We don’t recall encountering a disabled diesel pump in the Ram, but we frequently had to move the Ford between different chargers before successfully juicing up. On the worst travel day, we plugged 11 cords in—some multiple times, while chatting with the charging provider’s customer service line—to complete four charges.
That’s a crying shame, because our Lightning provided a serenely comfortable, quiet ride on the highway or around town. This is next-level comfort that only a Rivian R1T’s hydraulically interconnected suspenders can top in this class. It lugged full loads of mulch and towed with the greatest of ease . It’s also hella energy-efficient, averaging 1.8 miles/kWh—that’s 62.2 mpg-e.
We largely resisted the urge to charge our Lightning to 100 percent every time, sticking within the battery’s 20–80 percent “sweet spot.” By the end of its stay,estimated our range at 279–302 miles and predicted we’d still be at 274–279 within three years. Our XLT’s cloth interior still looked new, and without road-tripping and sitting in the truck while charging, we didn’t miss the larger screen on fancier models.
We were desperate to preserve or extend our range, so in addition to installing a fastback bed cap, we decided against more rolling-resistant winter tires. Straight-line acceleration and braking traction remained acceptable through our mild winter, though testing director Eric Tingwall felt cornering performance suffered.
