A combination of privatisation, deregulation and austerity have created bus deserts in many parts of the country, writes FisherAndrew79 🚌 Via ipaperviews
You wait decades for one bit of good news about buses, then three come along at once. Since the Thatcher government privatised and deregulated bus services in 1986, the number of passenger bus journeys made in Britain has declined,, and there are nearly 5,000 fewer bus routes compared to a decade ago.
A combination of privatisation, deregulation and austerity have created bus deserts in many parts of the country. Today, nearly half of all bus journeys in England are made in London.has meant more congestion in Britain’s cities, more pollution and worse air quality that is literally killing us in our thousands – with 64,000 a year dying prematurely in the UK due to air pollution.
While the temporary £2 fare is to be welcomed, it also has to be placed in the context of the last few years of abject failure on buses – in which routes have been lost and fares have risen above inflation.
