It should come as no surprise that blockbuster sequels dominated the box office in 2024. Disney struck gold with Inside Out 2, Deadpool Wolverine and Moana 2, and the only original films to crack the top ten were Wicked and the Chinese comedy-drama YOLO.
Will that (slightly depressing) picture change in twelve months’ time?Well, time will tell if the various comic book launches and reboots on the way – from James Gunn’s Superman to Marvel's Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts* – will catch on or become victims of widespread superhero fatigue. But A Minecraft Movie looks like a sure bet, ditto F1, the long-gestating racing drama starring Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem and Damson Idris. On the awards front, director Brady Corbet's The Brutalist – out in the US already but released here at the end of January – has been getting early buzz, ditto A Complete Unknown, Timothée Chalamet's Bob Dylan biopic. Of course, sequels and spin-offs could rule once again – and there are some high-calibre entries on the way. The final instalment of Mission Impossible which will be closely followed by the director Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later, the third entry into the acclaimed zombie franchise, alongside M3GAN 2.0 and Wake Up Dead Man: a Knives Out Mystery.
