The rear axle kicks into the action by way of an independent electric motor when traction needs dictate.
DeJongh says the ninth-gen Camry uses smaller and lighter-weight hybrid components, including a smaller battery that nonetheless produces more power than before. As a result, the new drive system relies more heavily on this more efficient battery and those electric motors, and that means a reduction in noise and a quicker throttle response.
