The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has provided advice on how pensioners can maximise their benefits, with a total of seven financial avenues available worth £11,352

State pensioners could be hundreds of pounds better off due to freebies and discounts they could be eligible for. In total, there are seven financial avenues they can explore worth a combined £11,352.

Benefits help - £108.55 a week People on some benefits, could be eligible for additional support, also known as a disability premium. This could amount to £5,644.60 annually. Eligibility criteria include reaching state pension age and having a physical disability , a mental disability , or both. To claim the standard minimum guarantee part of Pension Credit, your income needs to be below these amounts. In some cases, you might still be eligible if you have a higher income and you have a severe disability, you're a carer or you have to pay housing costs, such as a mortgage.

National Insurance reduction - £26.81 a week Once you reach State Pension age, if you're employed, you stop paying Class 1 National Insurance. If you're self-employed, you cease paying Class 4 National Insurance from April 6 after you reach State Pension age.
