Mon, March 11th 2024 at 4:12 PMMOBILE, Ala. —brought by the US government against the Mobile County Sheriffs Office show that 223 current and former female corrections officers are eligible to receive payment to settle the lawsuit.
The suit alleged that female workers at the jail were exposed to sexual harassment by male inmates exposing themselves, and that the department did not take actions to protect the workers from the sexually hostile work environment. The payments range from a low of $3,100 to a high of $16,800. In total $1.4 million in payments have been deemed as eligible for payment.
The settlement process identified 297 people as eligible to apply for the relief payment, nine individuals who submitted claim paperwork were deemed ineligible and 223 who submitted paperwork were determined to be eligible for payment. A fairness hearing has been scheduled for June 4, 2023 for the court to determine if the settlement is fair.
