The pensioner was getting just £400 a month and a small pension from her husband after he died

A widow has shared her story of how she secured a lump sum of £23,000 after being underpaid on her state pension. The pensioner was convinced that she should have been receiving more than the £400 per month she was getting, in addition to a small pension from her late husband.

The 71-year-old cared for her husband from 2013, when he began exhibiting symptoms of dementia, until his death in 2016. She was receiving less than £400 a month from her state pension and was dependent on money from his pension to survive. The Government is on a mission to rectify pension records, searching for those who missed out on an automatic increase in their state pension. This includes women whose husbands turned 65 on or after 17 March 2008 and are receiving less than 60% of their spouse's basic state pension.

The woman shared with the Times: "The stress of losing my husband was made worse by the worry of struggling on a low pension and how I would afford to live and this made my health much worse." Women born before April 6, 1953, and men born before April 6, 1951, are eligible for the old basic state pension, which although lower in its standard payout, offers a potential increase based on their spouse's national insurance contributions. This can occur after their spouse has passed away or upon reaching state pension age, depending on individual national insurance contributions and payment history.
