Just before my next appointment I dash to the toilet. Upon my return, I receive a call from a paramedic who needs to know some details about a patient I referred. Our receptionist also has a few possible patients on the phone that need to come in urgently. This delays my booked appointments even more.– I get to grab a short break and eat my lunch at my desk.

When patients are worried or anxious, they get angry. This is especially true if they are still on a long waiting list to get referred for their condition. A lot of the time, this anger is taken out on our receptionists. I am not very often in the firing line.Sometimes in the afternoon I run sessions fitting women with the contraceptive coil.

I am often too shattered to cook, so the slow cooker is my friend on at least one of my workdays. If not, I usually just snack until it’s time for bed. Thankfully I have a childminder for the days I am working so by the time I get home the kids are usually taken care of.– I get into bed. I am concerned about the patients I have seen today. I worry about whether I gave them the right treatment. GPs work alone rather than in a team of doctors, so the clinical responsibility always stops with me.
