Some of the biggest court cases to conclude in the UK last month

A Tube passenger who carried out a terrifying machete attack on a random commuter and a father who murdered his daughter by twice running over her body with his car were just two of the notorious criminals from across the UK locked up last month.

The 42-year-old said to officers that he went into the kitchen to pick up a meat cleaver which he hit Mrs Eldridge over the head with, causing a 10cm wound. The court heard that “rather by luck than judgment" she survived the “brutal” attack at their home in Ryde, Isle of Wight. Edward Vines An obsessed stalker with a fixation on former BBC Newsnight presenter Emily Maitlis has been jailed for eight years after attempting to breach a restraining order for the 20th time. Edward Vines wrote eight letters addressed to Ms Maitlis and her mother expressing his “unrequited” love for her, which he tried to send from HMP Nottingham between May 2020 and December 2021.

Rebecca Searing A nurse who stabbed her husband to death as he lay in bed was sentenced to life with a minimum term of 17 years in prison for his murder. Rebecca Searing, 52, told a 999 call handler: “I’ve stabbed my husband twice.” Searing was found guilty of murder following an earlier nine-day trial. She must serve 17 years before she can be considered for parole.

The court heard that Mr Carroll had tried to prevent him doing this as part of his duties as an employee, but Donovan approached him and punched him hard in the face causing him to fall to the floor and hit his head. A post mortem examination found Mr Carroll died of a fractured skull and an irreversible brain injury.

The incident caught on graphic CCTV footage went on for 20 minutes before Morgan was confronted by police and dropped the machete. Mr Porritt suffered a severe injury to his right hand as well as bone-deep cuts to his head and shin, and was given first aid by an off-duty doctor. Barrett and Richards also stole a Microsoft Xbox and an iPhone from the property as they warned the two housemates not to call the police and told them to “keep their ears open” as they went on to discharge the pistol in the street. Their attempt to convert the cash into Bitcoin was scuppered when the matter was reported and monies did not go through as the exchange platform they used had a 24-hour authentication process.

Jurors accepted Belfield caused serious alarm or distress to two victims and found him guilty of “simple” stalking in relation to Channel 5 and BBC Radio 2 presenter Mr Vine and theatre blogger Philip Dehany. BBC Radio Northampton presenter Bernie Keith was left suicidal by a “tsunami of hate”, the trial was also told.

Sergiu Boianjiu A convicted killer from Moldova was jailed for life for the “evil and depraved” rape and attempted murder of a stranger who he left for dead in an alleyway. Sergiu Boianjiu, who came to Britain after serving 10 years for the murder of his girlfriend in 2002, was caught on CCTV in February as he raped and repeatedly stamped on the head of a woman in Northamptonshire.

Jamie Crosbie An “isolated man” stabbed his neighbour to death after becoming annoyed by motorbike noise outside his house. Jamie Crosbie has been locked up for at least 28 years for the murder of father-of-three Dean Allsop. Nigel Malt A father murdered his daughter by twice running over her body with his car, after she tried to protect her boyfriend. Nigel Malt has been jailed for life with a minimum term of 18 years.

She said that when Malt said he was driving to her, she thought that her daughter “must be okay”. But when his car arrived and she saw inside the passenger door “the feeling of dread" started to come over her. “I just knew she wasn’t going to make it,” said Ms Malt. The National Crime Agency received intelligence about the communication and arrested him when he returned to the UK. Investigators then found Clayton had been messaging hundreds of boys from across the globe, spanning the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Iraq, Morocco, Turkey and others over a period of just three months.

Muldowney, a prominent street drug dealer in Richmond, fled the area but was arrested within days. On the day of his murder, Mr Hipperson, a recovering addict, had gone with a friend to buy drugs from Muldowney’s runner. Afterwards, Muldowney unsuccessfully attempted to bribe the friend to get out of town with offers of drugs and money.

Describing the attack, Mr Justice Sweeney told the court: “They jointly and brutally attacked him in the living room with their respective knives, with Jack striking the first blow. Edward Reeve made desperate attempts to get away from the attack on him including trying and succeeding to get out into the garden. However, in the end, he suffered eight stab wounds.”

In August, an Old Bailey jury convicted Issa Seed, 26, Adel Yussuf, 25, and Daniel Mensah, 32, from north-west London, of murder. The home-side homicide case is believed to be the first of its kind to be brought in England and Wales. She was convicted by a jury of soliciting to murder in July and has now been sentenced to 12 years in prison. The court heard she put out the hitman plea, which gave Ms Ruutna’s address, on a page claiming to sell “murder, drugs and guns”.

On Monday, December 20, 2021, North Yorkshire Police received a 999 call from supermarket staff, who had been approached by a man who told them that "someone is dead." Officers attended immediately and the man, Rutowicz, took them to a property on Mayfield Grove. Dainty, formerly known as Connor Fraser, has now been jailed for four years. He grabbed the child's face and shook it by its legs, Nottinghamshire Police said, initially blaming another child for causing the injuries in November 2019.

Quinn, formerly of Craven Lea, West Derby, but who also has links to Stockbridge Village and Croxteth Park, admitted being concerned in the supply of amphetamine between August 21, 2013, and April 24, 2014 during a hearing in July. He has now been sentenced to seven years in prison.
