From booking flights to planning days out, here are simple ways to save

Rising airfares, increasing hotel rates and the growing number of tourist hotspots charging a visitor levy are all helping to make travel more expensive. But that doesn’t mean giving up on the idea of an affordable holiday.

“Low-cost carriers typically use a dynamic pricing model, meaning that the cheapest fares are released first, and prices tend to increase as the flight fills up and the departure date gets closer. Waiting even a few days can mean paying significantly more, especially during peak season or for popular routes.”

Once you’ve found the price you’re willing to pay, it is often better to book directly with the provider as online travel agents may add a fee to the booking – and you may struggle to secure a refund or compensation with the airline or hotel should something go wrong. If you know there’s a big sale date coming up – such as Easter, Black Friday or Boxing Day – check the price of your desired trip before it begins. This will help you know whether a saving is worthwhile before you book.

The general rule is that hotels tend to be cheaper on a Sunday night since tourists tend to leave in the daytime and business travellers tend to not show up until Monday.“This is timeless advice in travel, but the reality of overtourism has boosted its importance,” says Elaine Glusac, from the Frugal Traveller column.

“Always travel with a GHIC and take out travel insurance, you never know what might happen and medical costs can quickly run into the high thousands,” says an ABTA spokesperson. Avoid being stung by these high prices by bringing your own snacks. Even when going through airport security, you can typically bring things such as packaged sandwiches and solid fruit – just throw away liquids before you reach the belt and check carefully about the rules in your destination before packing food in your cabin bags.Which? discovered that travel-sized toiletries can often end up costing significantly more per 100ml than full-sized versions of the same products.

Look into supermarket loyalty schemes such as Tesco Clubcard and Sainsbury’s Nectar card, through which you can earn points that can be converted into airmiles for Virgin Atlantic and British Airways.
