Learning assistants supporting pupils with additional needs are walking out in a dispute over job grading.

schools are set to close tomorrow as dozens of teaching assistants take strike action. Staff who support pupils with additional needs are walking out in a dispute over how their jobs are graded.

The assistants, who provide specialist learning support to children with additional needs in mainstreamA representative from Unison toldthat staff have had to “go beyond what's expected of them” working to support children who may otherwise be better-suited to a specialist school and that as a result “morale is at an all-time low”. The majority of primary schools in the area will shut their doors to pupils tomorrow , with the exception of Levendale, Knoxland, Linnvale, and St Mary’s which all have an enhanced support model in place.

The walkout comes after school staff voted overwhelmingly in favour of industrial action in a ballot last month. Unison regional organiser Gillian Bannatyne said: “Going on strike is the last thing these dedicated workers want to do.

“But they feel they’ve no choice after being undervalued and ignored for too long. It’s time the council took their work seriously and paid them properly for what they do.

" Unison West Dunbartonshire branch chair Aly McCulloch said: “Learning assistants take on responsibilities far beyond their job descriptions. “They de-escalate violent incidents, provide intimate personal care and support children with profound needs.
