A 3.8 magnitude earthquake rattled across New England on Monday morning, sending tremors from Connecticut to New Hampshire. While no damage was reported, the earthquake was widely felt, prompting many residents to report the experience on social media and call news outlets.

A 3.8-magnitude earthquake shook New England on Monday morning, sending tremors across a wide swathe of the region from Connecticut to New Hampshire. The quake was widely felt, with reports of shaking coming in from Boston , Needham, Milton, Brighton, Lowell, Augusta, and South Kingstown. People across the region described feeling a long, steady rumble, similar to an explosion, lasting several seconds.

While the earthquake caused no apparent damage, it did prompt a flurry of calls and social media posts, with many people wondering what had caused the shaking. NBC10 Boston's Pete Bouchard, who was outside with his dog when the earthquake struck, described the experience as 'Long, steady rumbling like there was blasting nearby. Went on for several seconds. No apparent damage.' Haven Hatch, another resident, recounted how the shaking prompted her boss to tell her to get out of the house, fearing it might be a furnace explosion. Christine Savini from Milton, Massachusetts, said her home shook so violently she thought her furnace had exploded. 'I thought the cause may have been an earthquake because I was once in San Francisco when there were tremors, and the house vibrated violently,' she explained. The earthquake, while not considered destructive, was a notable event for New England, which experiences smaller earthquakes less frequently than regions like California. John Ebel, a senior research scientist at the Weston Observatory, called it a 'once-in-five-year event.' The New Hampshire Department of Safety reminded residents to be prepared for any type of hazards, urging those indoors to 'drop, cover your head and hold on' during an earthquake, and those outdoors to 'move away from buildings, trees or anything that can topple over.' As of Monday morning, there were no reports of damage in New Hampshire.
