Norovirus symptoms can start very suddenly
As the weather turns colder and the nights become darker, it’s a sign that winter is on its way and with it comes an array of winter illnesses.
Norovirus, also known as the winter vomiting bug, is currently spreading across the UK and is often mistakenly associated with the flu.But unlike the flu, which is a respiratory virus, norovirus targets the gastrointestinal system and causes gastroenteritis - an inflammation of the stomach and intestines.
It can also be caught by touching surfaces or objects that have the virus on them, and then touching your mouth, or eating food that has been prepared by someone who has norovirus. These symptoms often come on suddenly, within one to two days of being infected. Other symptoms can also include a mild fever, a headache, aching arms and legs, and a loss of appetite.
It’s also advised that you avoid cooking and helping to prepare meals for others until 48 hours after your symptoms have stopped, as the bug can be spread through contaminated food when it is handled by people who are infected.
