A lacklustre 1-0 defeat on the night saw the Jambos crash out of the competition 2-0 on aggregate

Hearts failed to make the Europa League group stages after defeat to Czech outfit Viktoria Plzen at Tynecastle.

Naismith’s men were jeered off at full-time as the 2-0 aggregate loss capped off a miserable start to the new season. They’ve yet to win any of their six games so far this term in all competitions. Boyce - who has come back from long-term injury - is woefully short of confidence and took some stick from the Hearts fans before limping off in the second half. Vargas has a terrific work ethic but is not a natural goalscorer like Shankland who can sniff out chances in the box. Nasmith’s side registered just two meaningful shots on target all night and he’ll be praying to get his number nine back ASAP.

In the main, he picks his best team and sticks with it. It feels like Naismith now has to do likewise. It’s understandable that he wanted to strengthen his squad this term, competing in the Premiership and Europe.
