Archaeologists unearth previously undocumented ruins at the Castle Ward estate in County Down, potentially dating back to the late 17th or early 18th century.

Archaeologists have unearthed the remains of a collection of buildings at the Castle Ward estate in County Down, believed to be over 300 years old. The foundations of a courtyard and building complex were discovered during drainage work on the 18th-century mansion, now owned and managed by the National Trust.

Experts believe these newly discovered remains may date back to the late 1600s or early 1700s and were potentially demolished to improve the view from the later mansion built in the 1760s. The discovery was made by Michael Fearon from Northern Archaeological Consultancy while monitoring the drainage system construction. Malachy Conway, the National Trust's regional archaeologist for Northern Ireland, described it as a 'really significant' discovery, as there was nothing on their maps showing any structures in that location
