BACOLOD CITY – Thirty-one out of the 61 barangays in this city were flooded since Sunday night, August 27 due to the enhanced southwest monsoon or “habagat” and typhoon “Goring.”
Affected barangays were 1, 2, 6, 8, 9, 10, 16, 18, 21, 29, 30, 35, 36, 39, 40, Alijis, Banago, Bata, Cabug, Felisa, Handumanan, Mansilingan, Pahanocoy, Punta Taytay, Sum-ag, Singcang-Airport, Taculing, Tangub, Vista Alegre, Montevista, and Mandalagan.
City flood monitoring on Monday, August 28, said floodwater was as high as 10 feet in Purok Kaisahan, Barangay Sum-ag, while three to eight feet high in other areas of the barangay.Rivers in Barangays Banago and Mandalagan overflowed, while Sum-ag River and several creeks were at critical water levels on Monday.
Data released by the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office as of Tuesday, August 29, said 2,056 families composed of 6,781 individuals were evacuated.Barangay Sum-ag has the most number of evacuees with 468 families or 1,867 persons, followed by Barangay Pahanocoy with 399 families or 1,404 persons, and Barangay Singcang-Airport with 397 families or 1,140 persons.
Dr. Anna Maria Laarni Pornan, CDRRMO head, said that “the rains were cumulative and the grounds became saturated. There’s less water absorption because we’re an urban area.” Meanwhile, the city government extended the suspension of classes on all levels in this city until August 30 due to the inclement weather.
