Labour has claimed that nearly 35,000 people a month are waiting more than a fortnight for cancer hospital appointments since the Conservatives came to power.
It says that in January 2020, two months before coronavirus restrictions were implemented, 19,035 cancer patients had missed the NHS’s two-week target – a six fold increase.
However, it said Commons Library data provided to Labour showed that the proportion of patients who are seen within two weeks has fallen for every type of cancer compared with 2010.The figures show that in 2010/11, 95.5% of all suspected cancer patients were offered a follow-up appointment within two weeks. In May 2010, NHS England figures show that 996 people had been waiting more than two months to start their cancer treatment.
Labour has said its plans are designed to make sure 75% of all cancer is diagnosed at stage one or two.
