Scientists believe elevated seismic activity could indicate the arrival of additional magma under Mount St. Helens, a process called 'recharge.'

UPDATE: On Friday night just before 10:30 p.m., Round Rock Police announced on X that a second suspect had been taken into custody.FILE - A plume of condensation rises off Mount St. Helens , as viewed from the roof of the Cascades Volcano Observatory December 19, 2006 in Vancouver, Washington.

“We've seen upticks like this before, and it's part of our understanding of an active volcanic system that there's ebbs and flows with seismicity,” USGS Research Seismologist Seth Moran explained to KOMO News. “Overall, it's something that is a reflection that Mount St. Helens, geologically, is a very active volcano.”

Another possibility, Moran said, is that the “whole system is sort of overall pressurizing” and leftover magma from the previous eruption is cooling and releasing gas, which “can, by itself, pressurize the system and lead to these earthquakes.” “In essence, what we have is a blood pressure cuff continuously on Mount St. Helens and we're taking its pulse continuously,” Moran explained. “So, whenever there's any kind of deviations in that, that's when we really start paying attention and start asking ourselves, what could happen?”The USGS said elevated rates of seismicity, which have been interpreted as recharge, have been observed at Mount St. Helens in the past.
