The discovery was made inadvertently during recent quarry works in the Egyptian village of Dahshur, known for some of the country's oldest and most distinctive pyramids. Hidden under the desert sand were the remnants of an unidentified structure composed of finely cut limestone blocks. The burial chamber within was perfectly preserved, raising hopes of uncovering numerous extraordinary items. Yet, to the team's astonishment, the chamber had been plundered despite being sealed for 4,000 years.
Subsequent findings suggest the robbery occurred prior to it being sealed, an angle not considered before. Dr Naunton explained: "This means the burial was already disturbed before it was closed forever. The capstone was designed to keep intruders out, but it also ensured that the burial chamber was never checked again."
