Wolves, once a mainstay in the Colorado wilderness and across the entire United States, were mostly exterminated by the 1930s as a result of government-sponsored trapping and poisoning campaigns. Since that time, conservation groups have been lobbying to reintroduce wolves to restore environmental equilibrium—which, they contend, suffers in the absence of the important predator.

What can we expect to happen to the Colorado gray wolf population over time? While much is unknown, we can look to other reintroduction programs for insight. One similar effort took place in Yellowstone National Park beginning in 1995. Here are four consequences of the Yellowstone reintroduction effort, and what this might mean for the future of gray wolves in Colorado.

“Factors contributing to this decrease include bear and wolf predation, increased human harvests, winter-kill , and drought-related effects on pregnancy and survival,” state the researchers. The researchers estimate that a population of 100 wolves kill about 2,200 ungulates per year—or, put differently, 22 ungulate kills per year per wolf.Scientists predicted that the wolf reintroduction program in Yellowstone would have a negligible impact on livestock populations in the area. They were mostly right.
