For people who struggle with their gender identity, or don't feel like their reflection represents the person they are inside, mirrors can be especially hard to face. “Mirrors have always been my enemy,” says Caragh,* a transgender woman. “Seeing my reflection was like sticking my arm in a bear trap. Nothing good was going to come of it.” In June 2023, after years of building up her courage, Caragh decided to undergo facial feminization surgery .

” That’s a pretty hefty price tag, and because FFS is typically considered to be a cosmetic procedure, it’s usually not covered by insurance. “Some insurance companies provide some level of benefits to certain patients depending on what kind of plan they have,” Dr. Deschamps-Braly says. But he urges patients not to rely on that and to come prepared with financial resources.
