Data from 14 museums and hundreds of 3D scans reveal three new fossil kangaroo species, one of them was the largest kangaroo ever born.
Three new fossil species give scientists a unique opportunity to study the lives and hopping behavior of giant ancient kangaroos.Between 2013 and 2019, paleontologists unearthed numerous skeletons of ancient kangaroo species in Australia. A new study focusing on those remains reveals three previously unknown extinct kangaroo species. “Living kangaroos are already such remarkable animals, so it’s amazing to think what these peculiar giant kangaroos could have been getting up to.” Dr.
. They moved like modern-day swamp wallabies, small and adorable kangaroo-like marsupials that inhabit the eastern coast of Australia. The Protemnodon genus is no less than a puzzle whose pieces are scattered all around Australia. Paleontologists frequently encounter Protemnodon fossils in Australia, but most times they only find individual bones and not the whole skeleton.. Even for the current study, the researchers had to visit 14 museums in four countries.
“We photographed and 3D-scanned over 800 specimens collected from all over Australia and New Guinea, taking measurements, comparing and describing them. It was quite the undertaking,” Kerr said. After so much work, they have only unraveled a part of the puzzle. However, they believe that their findings will be valuable for future studies of Protemnodon.
“It feels so good to finally have it out in the world. I really hope that it helps more studies of Protemnodon happen, so we can find out more of what these kangaroos were doing,” Kerr added.Big blow for Intel, AMD: China tells telecom firms to phase out foreign chips
