Fire crews had the blaze about 50 percent contained on the U.S. side by Sunday evening; the fire started in Mexico on Saturday and spread to the U.S. side of the border

A wildfire that ignited in Mexico before burning north into San Diego County on Saturday had charred about 400 acres by Sunday afternoon, Cal Fire officials said. The fire burned about 250 acres of brush on the U.S. side of the border and 150 acres on the Mexico side. Crews reported it being 50 percent contained on the U.S. side but only an estimated 10 percent on the Mexico side as of Sunday evening, Cal Fire Capt. Brent Pascua said. The blaze started around 12:30 p.m.

Saturday and burned about 80 acres in Mexico before spreading across the border onto the south slope of Otay Mountain, Cal Fire Capt. Mike Cornette said Saturday. “We’re in contact with the Mexican Consulate and are coordinating as necessary,” he said. Due to the rural location of the blaze, no structures were threatened. No injures have been reported. Pascua said 60 firefighters worked on the blaze Saturday. About three dozen firefighters are planned for working Monday.
