The £460 increase in the state pension will be negated by the cut to winter fuel allowance and the cost of living, ministers have been warned
The Office for National Statistics said total pay increased by 4 per cent in the three months to July. Former pensions minister Sir Steve Webb said, based on inflation, pensioners need a rise of £250 to avoid a real-terms cut. “Even with this uplift, thousands of pensioners will be seriously worried about the cold winter months ahead, due to the Government’s decision to cut the Winter Fuel Allowance,” she said.
“But that won’t help anyone this winter and most pensioners will not benefit to the extent being suggested – either because they are on the old State Pension which attracts less of an increase, or because they don’t qualify for a full State Pension in the first place.”
