Forty-seven years after Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, Luke Skywalker's vaporators could be used to tackle real-world water shortages. In the 1977 sci-fi film that launched the iconic franchise, Luke and his aunt and uncle, Owen and Beru Lars, are moisture farmers on the desert planet of Tatooine, where surface water is scarce.
