A chance job advert led Dave Hunter to a long career steering the biggest ships in the UK
A Humber River Pilot who steers enormous ships on the challenging estuary is celebrating 47 years in the job.
Dave said:"The job really jumped out at me. I had never heard of a River Pilot, and it sounded really good, so I made some inquiries. After accumulating valuable experience and qualifications, Dave achieved the esteemed status of Class 1 Humber Pilot in 1980, and later qualified as a VLS Pilot in 1992.
The Humber Estuary, the largest harbour district in the UK, encompasses the Humber Pilotage Area, extending from the Spurn Light Float through the Humber Estuary, the River Ouse to Goole, and the River Trent to Gainsborough.
