A 5-alarm fire broke out at a Catholic church in Brooklyn Easter Sunday and flames could be seen billowing out of the top floor windows.
The fire, which erupted at around 1:45 p.m., spread across the second floor of Our Lady of the Rosary Pompeii, located at 225 Siegel St. in Williamsburg. Two civilians and three firefighters suffered minor injuries, according to the FDNY.
According to Zulma, a parishioner at the house of worship, a mass involving about 100 people celebrating the holy holiday was underway when the blaze broke out. “We were in mass, and we saw the smoke. We came and started calling 911,” Zulma said, lamenting the loss of the church. “I am very sad… very sad. My grandchildren were baptized there.”
Heavy smoke blanketed the area for several blocks while flames could observed licking at the sky from the rooftop. The New York City Emergency Management Department called on the public to steer clear of the area near McKibbin Court and Seigel Street in East Williamsburg.
