Around 5,000 British nationals and their dependants are believed to be in Lebanon and have been advised to leave immediately

Israel has assassinated a number of top commanders from the terror group Hezbollah, prompting threat of reprisals from the group’s Iranian allies.

But Whitehall sources say that could change if flights stop in the coming days. An official said: “At the moment, there are commercial flights going out of Beirut and those do currently have spaces on them, but if those flights are unavailable or there is a spike in demand we will look to put on charter flights as well.”

The UK Government remains uncertain whether Israel’s multiple attacks on Hezbollah herald the opening of a new front in the conflict, or will be followed by a period of relative calm because Israel feels it has fulfilled its short-term aims. She told Sky News: “I would be congratulating Prime Minister Netanyahu. I think what they did was extraordinary. Israel is showing that it has moral clarity in dealing with its enemies and the enemies of the West as well.
