On Aug. 24, 1973, a 21-year-old John Adams went to the old Cleveland Stadium with his big drum.

John Adams no longer is with us as a drummer, but his memory lives on with the bleachers named in his honor.

John Adams bangs the drum one last time as security guards clear the bleachers at Municipal Stadium on Oct. 3, 1993. That was the last baseball game played at the old ballpark.I first met Adams in 1980 when I was hired by The Plain Dealer to cover the Tribe. It was a very casual relationship. We’d run into each other at events over the decades.

He also loved baseball. He was one of those Tribe fans who’d sit at the game and bang the wooden seat next to him, imploring those dismal teams of the 1960s and 1970s to deliver a clutch hit.He called the old Tribe front office with the idea. They said as long as he bought a ticket “and didn’t bother anyone,” he could bring the drum to the game.Back then, the joke was a fan would call the Tribe and ask, “What time is tonight’s game?”On Aug.

That’s 33 years. Adams was at his post for 46 years. Of course, he was only at home games, so Score saw more.
