From shows to shoes, parties to pasta, six BritishVogue editors reflect on why Milan will always have their hearts.
The best fashion moment of my life? I actually nearly cried at the Versace show when Linda and Christy and Naomi sang George Michael on the runway. We used to beg to get the early plane to Milan so that we could be the first to get to Prada and Gucci when the lire made you feel wealthy for the one week during Fashion Week. My first Italian designer purchase was from Giorgio Armani: velvet black trousers that I bought in the outlet in 1989.
Who else but the Italians could have created the ‘It’ bag phenomenon? The Fendi Baguette was the first of its kind – and I was so proud to have one. It didn’t matter what else I wore, it always made me feel glamorous and expensive. Lots of bags in my life have come and gone since then but I still have my Baguette, and I don’t think I will ever be able to part with it. I hope it’s something my daughter will want to wear one day.
To me, the essence of Italian fashion is family – not just genetic family, but chosen family, too. Each time I have consulted for an Italian brand and spent extended periods of time in their ateliers, or have visited an Italian factory, I have been overwhelmed by the family mentality and of course the incredibly high level of craftsmanship – it’s like nothing I have experienced in any other nation. Each garment, bag and shoe is made and packed with the utmost care.
