Greater Manchester Police conducted a major operation in Stockport, resulting in 65 arrests within a single day. The operation targeted a variety of suspected offenses, including drug offenses and vehicle thefts, and relied heavily on information provided by the public. Officers executed 10 warrants, including a raid on a cannabis farm estimated to be worth £300,000.
Criminals in Stockport received a stern warning following a significant operation by Greater Manchester Police that resulted in 65 arrests within a single day. Dozens of officers were deployed across the area for a series of operations, including the execution of 10 warrants.
Police utilized a 'big key,' or battering ram, to forcefully enter warranted addresses, including one property in Cheadle Hulme, where the Manchester Evening News accompanied officers as they uncovered a substantial cannabis farm. Mature plants estimated to be worth £300,000 were confiscated during the raid. During the operation, figures provided to the M.E.N. revealed that officers also conducted 145 vehicle stops, issued 55 traffic offense reports, conducted 13 stop and searches, seized 3 vehicles, and engaged in 22 public interaction activities. The warrants targeted a wide range of suspected offenses, including drug offenses and suspected vehicle thefts. Operation AVRO is a force-wide initiative at GMP that directs resources to different districts within Greater Manchester each month. Its objective is to target crimes that members of the public have informed GMP are of most concern to them.Chief Superintendent Lewis Hughes, the Commander for Stockport, informed the M.E.N.: 'Operation Avro is taking place across Stockport. We're looking to make arrests of wanted criminals out in our communities. We are making a number of arrests.' He further added: 'It's about community engagement, being highly visible, showing that Greater Manchester Police is a force for good. We are tackling wanted criminals such as burglaries and vehicle crime, we're tackling broader crimes.' GMP relied on information submitted by the general public to carry out Operation AVRO in Stockport. This allowed them to conduct further investigations before executing warrants. At the cannabis farm in Cheadle Hulme, officers initiated an investigation using a drone after receiving a tip-off from the public about a suspected cannabis farm. The drone obtained information revealing unusual amounts of heat emanating from the property, which can be an indicator of cannabis cultivation. In a statement on February 14, the day following the operations, Chief Supt Hughes stated: “Throughout the day we tackled crime and criminals in our communities, executed search warrants and made arrests. To be able to do this we rely on information and intelligence submitted to us from members of the public. “I would like to thank people who stopped to talk to our officers during the day, engaged with us and our partners and asked questions or raised concerns to our officers. “Operation AVRO is a flagship event that highlights the work going on each and every day across Greater Manchester in our fight against criminality.
