The Netflix fantasy movie centered around turning the typical princess trope on its head, and Princess Elodie's gown played a significant role in this.
According to Monk, Elodie's Wedding dress in Damsel underwent 17 stages of deconstruction before the film's end. Between Brown and her stunt artists, 85 total costumes were constructed for this single gown. At one point in Damsel, Elodie attempts to escape from the dragon through a marrow passage within the caves, but the bone farthingale gets stuck. Brown's character must free herself from this literal cage before she can emerge into the next vault, which is a fairly overt metaphor for Elodie shedding the princess she had been forced to become and coming out the other end a survivor.
3 The Wedding Dress’ Sleeves In Damsel Added To The Effect That Elodie Was Caged Elodie's sleeves were meant to be a cage, but she put them to better use. The farthingale wasn't the only element of Elodie's dress in Damsel that contributed to the idea of her being caged. Monk added more bone detailing in the sleeves to bubble them out and create the illusion that the princess was tightly strapped into her wedding dress.
