A crazy idea, a stout transaxle, and a whole lot of fabrication is going to make this mid-engine, 632ci big-block-powered El Camino a reality.
All crazy hot-rodding projects start with a bit of inspiration. You get an idea that might sound crazy at first but the more you roll it around in your noggin the more it sounds like it could actually work. At that point the gears start turning as you try to figure out how to get from wacky concept to a fire-breathing hot rod. Well, this 1972 El Camino is being transformed over at
Inspiration is a funny thing. Sometimes it comes from seeing another build, or maybe something fanciful on the internet, or, in this case, a Hot Wheels diecast car. As Ruffian’s Chris Ashton told us, “We talked about putting in a C10. They have so much hood clearance it seemed a good fit. Except RWD trucks are already traction-limited and I wasn't ready to take on building a custom AWD chassis and suspension system meant for corner-carving.
With the El Camino stripped of parts, the body was sent off for media-blasting. It came back maybe a little rougher than they thought. Ashton stated, “The left rear quarter was pretty banged up, but the plan is to widebody it and stretch the wheelbase, so we'll be making new fenders anyway. We started on our usual modifications: shaving the driprails, modifying the window frames for flush-mount glass, and converting the clutch pedal to work with a hydraulic throwout bearing.
The wheel placement turned out to be a bit farther back than stock, so the plan is to stretch the wheelbase from 115 inches to 119.25 inches. This is similar to the wheelbase of a Ford Galaxie. All the measurements were then sent off to the Roadster Shop for the mid-engineEl Camino chassis build. Imagine the traction from all that weight over the back wheels! “I've always had a soft spot for Utes.
